The Livery Shop

In 2014, two of Calgary’s best-known and most-loved brands: CoutuKitsch Jewelry and Camp Brand Goods Apparel planted their roots together  in Inglewood as The Livery Shop, named for their historic livery stable location – a red barn tucked behind the iconic National Hotel. Alongside their own products, the owners furnished the shop with a curated selection of of local artisan-made goods and other fabulous independent, socially and environmentally conscious brands ranging from apothecary, to apparel, footwear, cards and gifts. As the store and the brands at the heart of it blossomed, they quickly outgrew their charming but small space and were presented with the opportunity to  move across the street into a new build designed by Calgary’s Modern Office of Design and Architecture. We were thrilled by the challenge to transition The Livery Shop into MODA’s contemporary, factory-inspired building while maintaining the cozy, community-oriented, casual feeling of their original, rustic location and set out to create a visual language that would marry the CoutuKitsch and Camp brands in their new home.

Community has always been central to The Livery Shop, from its inception through the many ongoing collaborations facilitated by the close knit team behind the store. To achieve our design solutions for this project, it felt fitting to lean heavily on our own community of local artists and industrial design talent. We called upon Ryspot to build custom terrazzo benches as a multifunctional feature for the centre of the shop – a piece that pulls triple duty as lounge, product display, and seating for customers as they try on shoes. Textural depth and colour was added to the space with a large tile installation behind the front counter, handmade by Becky. Dozens of glaze combinations combine to achieve a subtle gradient that moves from contemporary pastels (representative of the CoutuKitsch brand) to earthy forest greens, ochre, and sand-tones (the colours of Camp’s world.) Andrew designed and welded a modular shelving unit to furnish the apparel section of the shop, allowing for easy merchandising while maintaining a minimal aesthetic. Vintage “Calgary” bricks salvaged from a torn down heritage building were repurposed as a shoe display and additional seating area to lend additional texture to the space and offer a nod to Inglewood’s rich history. These key pieces are complemented by an assortment of thoughtfully sourced fixtures and custom-built baltic birch displays to complete the space – a gorgeous gallery, local showcase, and shopping destination for tourists and Calgarians alike.
